A Macintouch reader asked for help with a decade-long habit of "organizing" photos in all kinds of different places. He ended up with many duplicates. There were many helpful suggestions.
One reader suggested this app, which looks like it might be useful for photos and other files:

Note that this is for organizing files in the Finder. If your photos are in iPhoto, you should work within iPhoto. Rearranging iPhoto's files in the Finder could confuse iPhoto to the point that it'd need a long rest in an institution.
