Photos (Release Version)

Post by Stephen Hart » Thu Apr 09, 2015 4:08 pm

Thought I'd create a thread for first--and later--impressions of Photos.

One important thing to note is that the sidebar is not on by default. Check it out in the View menu. I breathed a sigh of relief.

Another is that, on my Mac at least, Photos is using 204% of available CPU. It clearly doesn't stay resident when quit, so you might want to just shrink the window into the Dock and let it do its thing overnight.

A third is that MacNewsNetwork, at least, says the new Photos library file consists of symlinks, not a real duplication of your library--in my case nearly 400 GB. In a brief test, I duplicated one file in Photos and another in the Aperture and didn't see the changes reflected even after restarting each app.
