Want to view your iPhone or iPad screen on your Mac?

Post by Jay Cline » Fri Apr 08, 2016 7:02 am

Every now and then you may wish to display something from your iPhone or iPad on your Mac. This may be during a presentation, or just for kicks, but if you have content on your phone and while you can always use various sharing services to send content to people or even to your Mac for displaying, another very quick approach can be done if you simply have an available lightning cable.

This process only takes a few steps:

Plug your phone into your Mac
Close all auto-opening programs like iTunes and Photos
Open QuickTime Player
Choose “New Movie Recording” from the File menu (or press Option-Command-N)
Click the small down-arrow next to the recording button
Choose your iOS device from the menu that displays

This doesn't seem to work on my computer using Snow Leopard (10.6.8). I don't see any devices listed in QuickTime drop down menu. I have iOS 9.3 on my iPhone and iPad. I looked at the link and I don't see that it says anything about what OS is required. I guess they just assume you have the latest.

Do you see this after you choose New Movie Recording from the File menu in Quicktime Player? That little arrow is what you need to click on to show your devices. I have Quicktime Player v. 10.4. I also have Quicktime Player 7 and option to choose your devices does not show in that version.

Yes, I see the arrow and get the drop down menu, but there aren't any devices listed. I just get the list of Camera, microphone, etc.- no devices and I did have it plugged in via the lighting/usb cord.
