Here's a summary from The New York Times.

And the Washington Post

And, if you prefer a bullet list, The Register

A focus on stability and user experience sounds great to me, though I'm perfectly happy with Yosemite on both counts.
Did anyone note any mention of Photos or Aperture? If Aperture is still supported in El Capitan, I'll probably sign up for the public beta.

As to the name, it certainly doesn't roll off the tongue like Mavericks and Yosemite. A reader on Macintouch noted that El Capitan is a feature within Yosemite, so maybe this update is intended to refine Yosemite, not be another location entirely.

So, in Apple's OS X El Capitan page, it looks like Photos is getting beefed up:
Locations, better Faces, third-party plugins (editing is mentioned, but others?), more robust album sorting

Here's from the Apple notes on the first developer beta:
Aperture
Known Issues
Importing RAW files may cause the app to quit unexpectedly.
The Aperture workspace may disappear occasionally. To bring back the workspace, click on the Aperture icon in the dock.
Some Sony RAW images may not appear correctly.
Dismissing certain dialogs may cause the workspace to become unresponsive and require a force quit and relaunch.
Aperture may quit unexpectedly when attempting to print photos. The Photos app can be used to print instead.
This looks quite hopeful to me. We may be able to look forward to having plenty of time to transition from Aperture to Photos, figuring out along the way which Photos plugins we need.
