Are you referring to the iOS version of Photos or the Mac OS version of Photos? Now that iPhotos is a thing of the past and the newest Mac OS comes with the new Photos application the SHARE/MAIL is the same for both apps on both operating systems.

For the Mac OS Photos look on the tools bar at the top for a box within which is an up-pointing arrow. Open that box and you'll find a variety of SHARE options including Mail.

In the iOS version the box with the up-pointing arrow is at the bottom.

Richard--thank you--the issue was the dropdown menu did not include a mail option--discovered that when I experimented with Thunderbird a month ago it had stayed lurking in the background and when I deleted it I had the mail option--

Thanks for your response.

One subtlety:

In Photos on the Mac, the Share icon on the toolbox and the Share item in the File menu are grayed out unless you have one or more photos selected.

In Aperture, both the icon and the menu are active even if you don't have anything selected, though none of the subitems are active. (Haven't tried iPhoto.)

There's no preference in Photos Mac to choose an e-mail app.
