Name That Tune!

Post by Stephen Hart » Sun Sep 28, 2014 4:10 pm

iOS 8 introduces the ability for Siri to "name that tune."
I know other services have done that in the past, but I've never bothered to test them. Today I tested Siri. She successfully named "Avenging Annie" by Andy Pratt, with its excellent piano riffs, (and offered to let me buy it). I was impressed. That song's not on the Safeway top 40 list.

I can't get it to work without asking "What's that song" or something similar.

But the results then are impressive:

Morris Medley by Albion Country Band
Twa Corbies by Brothers of the Balidi (Played in PA)
For What It's Worth by Buffalo Springfield
Blue Rondo A La Turk by The Dave Brubeck Quartet
Woman from Tokyo by Deep Purple
Embryonic Journay by Hot Tuna, (Live at Sweetwater) but only on a second listening

Siri recognized "I can't get started" by Bunny Berigan and his orchestra, a dance band from the 30s and 40s and "Meadows" by local musician Jeremy Cays. Then Siri said "please don't ask me to sing it."

I should have noted that I believe Apple bought, or contracted to use, one of the name-that-tune services. Can't remember the name just now, but it's on the iPhone when Siri is listening.

I was bragging to my wife Karen that Siri could do this while we were watching a movie tonight. There was a snippet of a cool rhythm and piano piece we both liked. So we tested, and Siri got it in one: Unsquare Dance by Dave Brubeck.
