iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 plus

Post by Stephen Hart » Tue Sep 09, 2014 12:15 pm

I'll be preordering an iPhone 6 as soon as possible. My date for a new phone with Verizon is September 19, so I think I can preorder and get it to ship on day one. That is if they're not sold out.

I can live with the slightly larger size, but I'm sure glad the plus size isn't the only iPhone.

I think I may go for the iPhone 6 Plus myself.

I took a quick trip to my workshop and made an actual size prototype ( 6.22" x 3.06" x 7.1"), and it fits pretty well into both my hand (see photo) and my pant pocket. It also works pretty well in a shirt pocket.

I like the fact that I can enlarge the icons as well as the text, not to mention use a larger keyboard in portrait view. The extra 10 hours of battery life and HD pixel resolution is also more to my liking ... 1920 x 1080.

Note that the iPhone 6 base model is 16 GB as in the past. The next step up is 64 GB at the same price as 32 GB was in the past.

Last week Verizon listed my upgrade-eligible date as Sept. 19. Today, I can upgrade immediately. I'll wait until the 12th to preorder.

Did you use some leftover deck plank for the prototype? :D

If you're not good with tools like Ray is, here's an article from Cult of Mac that has a link to download 1:1 size charts for the iPhone 5s, 6 and 6 Plus. Just make sure you set your printer to 100% and then you can cut out the sizes and hold them in your hand.

At least for the smaller iPhone 6, the smooth, rounded edges will help it slip in and out of pockets. I slightly modify my jeans to make an iPhone pocket, and I expect the iPhone 6 will fit in the same pockets.

I think Tim Cook announced when the the iPhones would ship but I don't remember what he said. What's the shipping date?

It's September 19th. I should have done a quick Google search before posting my earlier question.

iPhone 6 and 6 plus Preorder date Sept. 12 (through Apple or carrier)
OS 8 available Sept. 17
iPhone 6 and 6 plus "release" date Sept. 19

It's not clear to me whether the release date is also the deliver date. If you preordered, you can pick up the iPhone 6 in an Apple Store. In the past Apple's set up elaborate delivery plans so the drooling masses (I've been one in the past, and will be one this year) all get their iPhones on the same afternoon.
This site says "You don’t need to go to a local store if you want your iPhone 6 pre-order delivered on September 19th. Apple offers free shipping for the iPhone 6 pre-order."
I'm planning to preorder Friday from Verizon.

Weirdly, Apple's still mum about Yosemite's final ship date, though the consumer beta 2 seems pretty near perfect. You won't be able to use some of the features of OS 8 without Yosemite. Maybe Apple's waiting for those using the consumer beta to also be using OS 8 to see if any bugs emerge.
