Post by Revan » Mon Jul 07, 2014 3:01 pm

New guy here! Hey, anybody know of this new Mac email address, i.e. @me.com? Ran into some people who had this as their email and I wondered (A) how to get it, and (B) what's the advantage if any?http://www.straitmac.org/phpBB3/posting ... =post&f=22#

The current name and extension is @icloud.com. If you've had an account long enough, you may have an address like @mac.com. That's what I have and use a lot. If your account was set up later, your address might be @me.com. And now, as far as I know, all new addresses are @icloud.com. All older addresses continue to work fine.
Of course, you can't set up your own domain called mac.com or me.com. But you can--for some money--buy and maintain a domain name, and then pay for hosting service for that domain, and then use that domain as your e-mail address.
And there are many other ways to have an e-mail address, if you're willing to let a for-profit company (whose name we dare not write) scan your e-mail for advertising opportunities.

Thanks for the explanation, well noted. The avatar icon is from a photo from a real woodblock print we witnessed at the Seattle Asian Art Museum. :D http://www.straitmac.org/phpBB3/posting ... =22&t=1579#

I just happened to review this thread and realized I didn't answer your questions.

To get a @icloud.com address, all you need to do is set up an Apple ID.
https://appleid.apple.com/account

Be sure to carefully record the password and security questions.

You can have as many Apple IDs as you want, but don't go overboard, as that can get confusing.

It's free, and comes with iCloud storage. What, exactly, iCloud includes is changing over the next few months. But we can say that it will include photo storage and availability on all devices, as well as file storage and availability on all devices running the right software.

It's an IMAP e-mail account, which means you can access it from any device using the same Apple ID.
Note, however, that if you move an e-mail from the inbox on your Mac to a folder (mailbox) in the On My Mac section, that removes the e-mail from iCloud. If you want to keep mail available on all devices, set up folders in the iCloud section.
I have an @mac.com e-mail address that I use on my iPhone and my Mac. My wife has an @icloud.com address used only for her iPhone.

In Mail on your Mac, you can manage as many e-mail addresses as you like. You could also have multiple e-mail addresses on an iPhone or iPad.
Note, however, that you need to be careful to note which e-mail address you're sending from. It's easy to respond to an e-mail and send it from the wrong address.
