Nike+ No Longer Works

Post by Richard Serkes » Thu Apr 17, 2014 6:43 pm

I just purchased a new iPod Nano specifically to use during workouts. I wanted to upload my workout data to Nike+ online where I could get a detailed analysis of what I'd done. After following all the steps to automatically send the workout data to Nike+ I just couldn't find my data online. After emailing tech support at Nike+ I was told that Nike+ no longer supports the iPod Nano even though it says it will in iTunes. Nike+ is aware that iTunes still thinks Apple and Nike are playing nice but the program was discontinued "some time ago." Yet when you go to the Apple.com site and check out what the iPod Nano will do it still talks about syncing data with Nike+ for analysis.

And to rub salt into the wound, not only do I have to pay return S&H to the merchant but the merchant has a 15% restocking fee. So I'm out approximately $27 because Apple's website still says the iPod Nano will work directly with Nike+. Phooey!

First, I'd look carefully at Apple's text to make sure there are no weasel words. But if Apple says the nano will work, I'd e-mail Apple.

When I had trouble downloading the rather expensive Final Cut Pro, Apple immediately reversed the charge to my card with no questions asked. When a little later, the download automatically completed, I wrote back to explain. Their answer was "Enjoy!"

I didn't buy the Nano from Apple. I bought it from a merchant who offered it at $10 less plus no tax so it was actually more than a $10 savings. Of course that savings is out the window. I can't fault the merchant as this is an Apple/Nike+ problem.

As for the "weasel words" you can read what's on the Apple website yourself. For that matter if you go into the Nike+ site it still says you can automatically upload data using iTunes and even gives instructions. So both the Apple and Nike+ websites are out-of-date and need to be corrected.

Complain (politely) to both companies. Make it clear that you're not a satisfied customer. It shouldn't matter where you bought your nano. It's an Apple product with an Apple warranty and it doesn't do what Apple ads say it'll do. If you bought it recently, Apple may well just take it back.
I don't know anything about Nike, but surely they have a customer relations department.

Of course, all this may take more time than it's worth.

Nike will say, "You didn't buy it from us. Why should we make up the loss" Apple will say, "You didn't buy it from us. Why should we make up the loss." And the merchant will say, "We sent you what you ordered. If two other companies have erroneous information on their websites why should we forgo our stated return policy and make up the loss?"

Sometimes you just have to cut bait.

From the NikePlus website: All generations of the iPod nano are compatible with Nike + iPod, but there important differences for each generation. Follow these easy setup instructions to begin using Nike + iPod on your iPod nano.

Yes, I know what it says. I know how to set things up for my 7th generation iPod Nano. I know what it says on the Apple website. I also know it doesn't work anymore. Below is the response from the Nike+ tech support guy explaining that the specific feature I wanted and bought the new iPod for is no longer available.
