Shared Apple ID's

Post by swifty » Wed Dec 18, 2013 10:28 am

In our family, we have 2 macs that share the same Apple ID's which is handy for purchases from the App Store. Now we have an iPad for each computer and the question is, can we create separate iCloud accounts but keep our shared Apple ID's. If so, is there a straightforward way to create separate iCloud accounts? Thanks

Each iCloud account is tied to one Apple ID. You can set up both iPads with the same Apple ID or create a new Apple ID for one and switch when needed.
Anything purchased with an Apple ID can be installed on any device you own that's signed into that Apple ID.

Yes, it is possible ... but things could get confusing, since you would both be using two different Apple IDs for different purposes, and would have to remember which password works with each Apple ID.

If you do choose to create separate individual iCloud accounts, these could be used to access individual data from the iCloud website ... but you would each have to use a different e-mail address as an Apple ID in the iCloud setup process.

The shared Apple ID could still be used to purchase content from the iTunes, iBooks, and App stores. Just be sure to be logged into that account when using the App Store app and at the iTunes Store on your Macs, so that updates will continue to work. You would use your new individual iCloud Apple ID only to share data among devices.
