Hotmail to Apple Mail

Post by waras » Fri May 06, 2011 9:36 pm

I use Hotmail on the web and have recently got a new Mac. I can open my Inbox in Apple's Mail program but my Junk Mailbox doesn't show up. How does one get all the Hotmail boxes to appear in Apple Mail?

Please post a snapshot of your Mail's sidebar. I'd like to see exactly what's showing.

I think Hotmail will only show your inbox using POP. You'll have to login to your Hotmail webmail to see all mail boxes or switch to IMAP instead of POP if Microsoft supports IMAP using Hotmail.

Richard's request for a snapshot of your Mail's sidebar brings up another Mac thing that you might not have yet encountered. The usual way to take a screen shot is to do "Command-Shift-3" after which you will hear a clicking sound and an item named Screenshot 1 (or something like that) will appear on your desktop. That takes the whole screen. If you want to take a shot just of the sidebar.... use "Command-Shift-4." When you do that, your cursor will turn into a cross-hairs that you use to draw a rectangle around the thing you want photographed. When you release the mouse the snapshot will be made. Try it. And post your picture here!

Make it easy on yourself and download the free version of SnapNDrag. There's a "paid for" version that has more bells and whistles but the free version will do what you need and it's a lot easier to use than trying to remember keystroke commands.

Go to: http://www.yellowmug.com/snapndrag/

Here's a YouTube video showing how to set up Hotmail in Apple's Mail application. At the end of the video you can see the narrator's sidebar which shows INBOX, SENT, and TRASH. So Mail should be able to show you these folders.

Go to: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9_DEwssJ ... re=related

Just as a footnote, I found an XXX rated video on how to set up Hotmail in Mail. There are some truly strange people out there on the I'Net. I bet Jay Cline burns up a lot of bandwidth trying to find that XXX video.
