iPad 3 to debut

Post by Stephen Hart » Wed Feb 29, 2012 10:04 am

Apple has sent out press invitations for an iPad-related event to be held next week in San Francisco.

The event will be held March 7 at the Yerba Buena Center for the Arts Theater, where previous iPad events have been held. The invitation bears an image of an iPad and says: “We have something you really have to see. And touch.”

For those who have an iPad 3 (today is delivery day, and I know there is are at least one two of you), is the monitor as beautiful as it looks in the Apple ads?

My 64GB iPad 3 Wi-Fi arrived about noon today. It took about 2 hours to copy everything over from my last iPad 2 backup.

And yes, the display is "awesome", making text much easier to read ... and photos much nicer to view.

Attached is a sample screenshot from Pages, although you will have to imagine just how crisp the text looks on a 9.7" diagonal display.

Here's a post from today's Macintouch that's relevant here.

The "Observatory" app, one of the most beautiful apps for the original iPad, was just updated for the new retina display. Seen side-by-side, the detail and sharpness of the new iPad's screen versus the original is stunning.
On the other hand, the same IOS 5.1 wallpaper looks identical on the two screens. Unless an app specifically utilizes the new display's capability, the visual difference will not be noticeable.
I can't find an app called "Observatory," though.

And here's a blog post with photomicrographs of iPad screens, for comparison:

The new Kindle app has been updated to take advantage of the retina display of the iPad 3. When I opened a book in the Kindle app on the iPad 3 I couldn't believe how sharp and crisp the "print" was. Not that it looked bad on the iPad 2, because the image was great, but on the iPad 3 it looked like every page was engraved.

I've upgraded several apps now to use the retina display and can tell a big difference. The weather apps that display steaming satellite images are almost like being in the clouds looking down.
