Printing from an iPad

Post by Photo Jeanne » Fri Aug 26, 2011 6:45 pm

Does any one know if there is a way to print from an iPad? Except for the obvious, i.e. having an airprint printer, or emailing a document to myself. I have a blue tooth printer, and the iPad is bluetooth, but it doesn't seem to find the printer. Any suggestions?

thanks

Go to the App Store and check out PrintCentral for iPad. It's been getting some good reviews. It can handle bluetooth printers.

The short answer is that there is no easy way to print from all apps that you would probably want to print from. Printing directly from an iPad to a non-AirPrint enabled printer (even a Bluetooth enabled printer) would require having an appropriate printer driver available, and iOS4 just does not include any printer drivers.

So, depending on what you want to print, the only current solution may be a third-party app, like PrintCentral. Using PrintCentral, files are sent to a print server application (called WePrint Server) via Wi-Fi that is running on your Mac. Then, using the drivers stored on your Mac, the server sends the file to the printer.

However, don't expect Print Central, or any other iPad printing app to provide the straight-forward type printing capability that you have on your Mac.

The iPad just doesn't have that capability ... yet.

Also keep in mind that new inkjet printers are really cheap. If you already have a good-quality printer, a second one just for the iPad might be an option, assuming you want to print a lot.

Thanks all. I think for now I'll just do without.
