iPad transfer

Post by KarenColes » Thu Jan 03, 2013 4:33 pm

My husband just got a new iPad (retina display) for Christmas, and he's trying to figure out how to transfer everything from his old iPad 1 to the new iPad. He set up the new one as a "new iPad", and now the information he gets tells him that before he can proceed, he must upgrade the system software on his MacBook Pro to OS 10.7 (it us currently running OS 10.5.8).

He wants to avoid having to do this, if possible, and there must be a way to transfer apps, iTunes, etc. between iPads, since some folks with iPads don't even have computers, right?

Since his new iPad is still under the part of the warranty that offers free calls to AppleCare, I'd give them a call and let the experts figure out how to do it.

If the MacBook were running a newer version of the OS then he could update to the newest iTunes and the transfer would be a piece of cake. Not having the newest iTunes available muddies the water and I don't know how to overcome it...but AppleCare will figure it out.

If you are sure that your version of iTunes does not allow for the installation of your purchased apps by using the checkboxes in the Apps tab (which have been replaced by Install/Remove buttons in iTunes 11), then you can download the apps without using iTunes.

On the iPad launch the App Store app, tap the Purchased tab at the bottom of the screen and the Not on This iPad at the top of the screen. The display should look like the screenshot below.

Then just tap on the cloud button corresponding to each app that you want to download. This process could take some time, depending on the number of apps and your internet connection speed.
