Last week, The New York Times ran an article anticipating the decision:A jury awarded Apple more than $1 billion in damages on Friday after finding that Samsung infringed a series of its patents on smartphones and tablet computers.
If Apple prevails, experts believe Samsung and other rivals in the market will have a much stronger incentive to distinguish their smartphone and tablet products with unique features and designs to avoid further legal tangles.
“I think what we’ll see is a diversification of designs in the marketplace if Apple wins,” said Christopher V. Carani, an intellectual property lawyer for McAndrews, Held & Malloy in Chicago.
I think this is great for consumers. What we want is a diversity of products, some good at some things, others good at other things. If companies merely wait for Apple to innovate, then create knock-offs, consumers are the losers.
