Does the Touch have a built in GPS like the iPhone does?

The Touch does not have full GPS capability. You have to be within range of a wifi hotspot to get it to figure out where you are. There are adapters that will give your Touch GPS capability but in my view you'd be better off with a nice GPS device.

Well Santa messed up big time, now didn't he? How can you use all the apps on the Touch that need your location when you live where we live and WiFi hotspots aren't available in the forest?

FWIW, I'm not sure the iPhone would place one accurately enough to use for hiking. At least, when I was trying to record some locations in ONP, I ended up finding them visually in Google Earth to get the approximate coordinates.

OTOH, with the iPhone, you could photograph the map at the trailhead, and have that with you while you walk.

Neither should be considered a substitute for staying on a well-marked, single trail or carrying a proper printed map. The map will, for example, survive dropping in a stream or mud puddle.
