Voice Memos Returning after Deletion

Post by Stephen Hart » Thu Sep 27, 2018 2:29 pm

If you use iOS Voice Memos, you may have seen previously deleted recordings mysteriously return to your iPhone.

Searching on the web, I found one main explanation. When you sync your iPhone, a copy of each voice memo is copied into iTunes in a music playlist called, appropriately enough, Voice Memos.
But I had deleted that playlist several times, and still the voice memos returned. This persisted for years.

Finally I had a hunch. I first checked iTunes again: no Voice Memos playlist. Then I did a Finder search, and that turned up a folder in iTunes named Voice Memos. I deleted that in the Finder and that permanently deleted the old voice memos.

So it turns out that deleting a playlist doesn't delete the individual files. And those 8 or so files, buried among many hundreds of music files were essentially invisible.
