iPhone XS Arrives

Post by Stephen Hart » Fri Sep 21, 2018 3:50 pm

I had an easier time this year than last year following Apple's directions to transfer data. Last year I made the mistake of starting at Quick Start, but then if you want to restore from an encrypted iTunes backup (which has all your data and passwords), you just have to erase the iPhone and start over.
All the issues I see are related, quite reasonably, I think, to Apple's calculation that not every iPhone customer has a Mac (Sad!)

There are still glitches:
There are a couple of steps before you get to choose Restore from iTunes Backup.
You have to go through the "Finish Setup" twice.
You have to sign in to iCloud twice.
Restoring from iTunes was relatively quick, even including downloading Seven Samurai to the iPhone.
The biggest issue is that iTunes no longer has anything to do with your apps. So all third-party apps have to be downloaded again over WiFi. With our slow DSL, that takes a long time, and occupies our DSL during that time.

[The next day]
But all my apps downloaded overnight.

Here's an easy-to-read summary of what's new in the iPhone XS and XS Max.

It seems as if iTunes still has glitches.
I haven't seen my iPad or iPhone disappear from iTunes in a while, but now my iPhone XS has no image next to its name. When I first used iTunes to restore my data, the image was a plain black rectangle. No there's nothing.

My iPhone X showed up as expected. I suppose it is possible that Apple hasn't added a custom image for the XS yet or that the internal identifier for the image is hard coded so the app doesn't just keep using the X image. Or my case could be one of a kind.

By the way, I did find this
iTunes 12.8 won't recognize your iPhone xs.
Which presents a problem for folks with Macs too old for Mojave

But I'm running iTunes 12.9.
