Lucky, or you're more charming than me. Or maybe the carrier makes a difference. Sprint etc. apparently still have stock. Mine's Verizon.
First off, the store didn't reappear for me until about 12:15. By the time I could get the store up on my iPad (I also checked the web store), shipping dates were mid November.
Then I spent a good 40 minutes getting one or another "try again" message before I gave up.

I did get my order in this morning with no problems. Shipping mid December.

Possibly both, although I would guess that persistence was also key.

I spent about eight minutes repeatedly launching and quitting the Apple Store app on my iPad before getting through.

I just now ordered a black "Survivor Strong for iPhone X" case from Griffin https://griffintechnology.com using the $10 discount code: 10BUCKS

Both the case and phone should get to me by next Friday!!

Cool, Ray.

I was plenty persistent, but I have much slower internet than you, so much of the time I spent refreshing was probably lost in downloading. As I wrote, by the time I saw the store up again, the first lot of iPhone Xs had sold out.
Another possible factor was that I was joining the iPhone Upgrade Program, which requires several extra steps. It may well be that all the failures and "try again" messages were related to that.

But it's not a problem. My iPhone 6s is only a year old because of a battery recall, so everything's copacetic.

I'll check out the case you mention. But it'd have to fit in my pocket.

I read a couple of articles claiming that some iPhone X orders, by existing members of the iPhone Upgrade Program, were being assigned earlier shipping delivery dates. The initial delay was presumably because the Citizen's One system was malfunctioning early on Friday the 27th, causing orders to fail, and people to have to place an order far later than their initial attempt.

That's essentially what happened to me, though I was joining the program.

I checked my order status today and found:
Delivers 17 Nov, 2017 - 24 Nov, 2017 by Standard Shipping
That's three weeks earlier than the delivery window originally quoted by Apple for my Friday morning order.

O.K. I have started a new thread to describe the setup process.
