Someone found some specific long strings of non-English characters that can cause the Messages app to crash and shut down the iPhone. When Messages tries to restart, it tries to reread the message and crashes again. Apparently some chronological and/or mental children decided to send the message string around to lots of people.
No lasting harm is done to the iPhone.
Here's Apple's page on the issue. They say they're on it and will issue an update. Meanwhile:
