Shot on iPhone

Post by Stephen Hart » Tue Jan 22, 2019 3:19 pm

Apparently in a new promotion, Apple is emphasizing the "Shot on iPhone Challenge" January 22 until February 7.

I don't know if this is new, but:
It is also possible to enter by submitting the image to shotoniphone @apple.com with the filename format "firstname_lastname_iphonemodel."

Here's a somewhat angry-sounding editorial on how Apple's contest rips off photographers:

Fair enough.

Contests where you give away intellectual property are not new, nor exclusive to Apple. And Instagram, Pinterest, Twitter and Facebook rely on people giving away intellectual property. All major newspapers continuously ask people to send in their stories and photographs and videos, and of course, comments and "reviews" are all intellectual property given away--including comments on Apple Insider, of course.

As a professional writer for a couple of decades, I'm familiar with all kinds of terrible contracts and ripoffs. But in this case, I find it hard to be outraged.

Appended to the fine print anchoring the story, Apple says winners will receive licensing fees when their photos are used for marketing purposes.

Here's Apple's Shot on iPhone XR — Experiments II and a behind-the-scenes video.
They set up 32 iPhone XRs ($23,968) in a circle all focussed on a single point, set them to film in slo mo, then dropped various things into the circle.
