Here's Apple's official page on this malware, including a promise to provide an OS X security update to further protect against it.
I hope that fix includes some way to deal with the specific javascript exploit that freezes Safari, and not just a fix overly specific to this malware.

Meanwhile, be sure to uncheck Open "safe" files after downloading in Safari > Preferences > General.
And never give admin access if you see an unexpected request. And never put your credit card number into a web form unless you know exactly why that's needed.

This afternoon I was doing a Google search for an image. I clicked on the image to view full size and a download started. The download was "anti-malware.zip" into my downloads folder. A window opened asking where I wanted to install it with no option to cancel. I quit Safari and trashed the download after making sure there were no new processes running in Activity viewer. Make sure you have the box unchecked to allow opening safe files after downloading.

One would assume that Google will get on top of this. After all, the first weak link is the fake image-to-site links that Google's hosting. Why Apple gets heat and Google doesn't is beyond me.

I'm going to post this as a separate thread so no SMUGger misses it. (If moderators want to, they can fold that thread into this one some time.)
