Is there a downloadable version of simple text available for OS 10.6.4?
Thanks in advance.

Somebody is going to call me on this but I thought Simple Text was a OS9 application. If so it won't run on OS 10.6.x.

What you want is TextEdit, the OSX successor to SimpleText. It opens all old plain-text documents and many others. It even does a better job of opening really old Microsoft Word documents than Microsoft Word does.

yourharddrive > Applications > TextEdit.app

It's much more powerful and feature-rich than SimpleText (or AppleWorks), and vastly easier to read on screen (because it uses OSX's core text-drawing routines), etc. etc.

If you have a SimpleText document from the days when dinosaurs walked the earth, and it doesn't open in TextEdit on your newer Mac, follow these steps:

1. Single click the SimpleText document to select it.
2. Choose Get Info from the Finder's File menu.
3. In the window that appears, choose Open With > TextEdit
4. If you want all such files to open in TextEdit, click the Change All button

TextEdit is free and is a part of all OSX standard installs.

I use it more than any other word-processing app nowadays.

Fire it up, then set the Dock icon to Keep in Dock.
