After speaking with a well placed city employee it looks as though PAFD employees will be using iPads to file fire and medical reports instead of expensive ruggedized Windows laptops when city-wide wifi goes into action. Most PAFD employees already use iPads for personal use.

Do you know more about the city-wide WiFi? I believe I read in the PDN that it would be hideously expensive for ordinary consumers.

Drive around PA and you'll likely see a node every couple of blocks hanging from light poles. There is a node about a hundred feet from my house.
I tried using it for the first time this evening and results are inconclusive as most of the time Olypen MetroNet didn't work. It would load a website and then hang.

Yep, that’s the article I recall.

"But after that, except for one hour a day and 12 days a year, it will be accessible only by paying fees of up to $34.95 a month for mobile users and $37.95 a month for fixed-point service, Charles “Doc” Beaudette, OlyPen general manager, said Wednesday."

I did a speed test of Port Angeles city-wide wifi this evening using my home iMac. The service is free for the month of Oct.

Using PA city-wide wifi:
Download Speed: 2114 kbps (264.3 KB/sec transfer rate

Upload Speed: 640 kbps (80 KB/sec transfer rate)

My normal speed using Wave Cable:
Download Speed: 7383 kbps (922.9 KB/sec transfer rate)

Upload Speed: 1399 kbps (174.9 KB/sec transfer rate)

My iMac can't even discover the city wifi but with those speed results I'm not missing much. I have similar speeds with my Wavecable.
