Password Protect pdfs in Preview

Post by Stephen Hart » Thu Jun 07, 2012 12:53 pm

Over at Macintouch, a reader asked how to "lock" pdfs in Lion. He confused Lion's file lock feature with password protection.

I suggested Adobe Acrobat, and wrote that Reader and Preview can't password protect files.

Another Macintouch reader corrected me on that point. I was technically correct, you can't add password protection to an open file like you can in Acrobat. It's not obvious, but Preview can be used to make a password protected copy of an open pdf.

Choose Export in Preview > File and check the "Encrypt" box.

I'd never seen that option.
