Time machine and external hard drives

Post by RWehner » Thu Oct 13, 2011 3:48 pm

IPhoto is taking up 139 GB of my 250 GB hard drive which is now 84% full (210 GB used) It seems to be running slow. I am planning to move IPhoto to an external hard drive (1 TB) to free up space on my IMac 10.6.5. I have just purchased a 2TB time capsule that I will use for backup. My question is: Will Time machine also back up the external hard drive that will be used only for IPhoto? One more question while I am at it: How can I find out what is using up the other 70 GB on my hard drive?
Thanks; Ron Wehner

Time Machine only backs up your startup drive. That's a basic issue with having more than one drive: you have to back put the drives separately.

[See Rick's reply below.]

Can you upgrade the internal drive? Which iMac is it?

Thank you, I am very surprised at the quick reply, only 8 minutes. I had read something on a forum that suggested it was possible for TM to back up an external disk but I wanted to be sure. I am not interested in upgrading the internal drive, to complicated for me. My IMac is 6 years old and I would rather upgrade in another year or two.
Thanks Again

Actually, in Time Machine Preferences, under Options... you can select what drives to exclude from the backup. Any drives that are on and connected that aren't on that list will be backed up. Of course, if you are backing up multiple drives, you should make sure your backup drive is large enough.

Oops. Thanks Rick. I got that one completely wrong.

Can Time Machine wake the other external drive?
