OS X does a reputable job protecting your Mac from malware, but like any such program you have to keep the malware definitions up-to-date. Make sure you've enabled the protection by going to Systems Preferences/Security & Privacy and checking the appropriate box. Only the Administrator can do this.

Note that you must unlock the panel before you can change that checkbox.

I unlocked that screen so the image wouldn't be grayed out. I did mention you have to have administrator's privileges.
