Customizing Login Screen

Post by Richard Serkes » Mon Oct 15, 2018 4:18 pm

I have customized my login screen so there's a message at the bottom when my Mac is booted, either a cold boot or a reboot. The message states my name and phone number and asks anyone seeing the login screen to please contact me because the Mac has either been stolen or lost. Fortunately that has never happened but should it happen and my Mac falls into the hands of an honest person that person will know how to contact me.

But now I need to change the customized message. For the life of me I can't remember how to do it and I've gone through every possibility in System Preferences. It's been so long since I originally set up the message that I can't even remember if I used something from within the MacOS or perhaps a 3rd party app.

If you know how to add/change a message on the login screen please post your instructions here. Thanks.

Never mind! I was using SEARCH in System Preferences and couldn't find it. When I used SEARCH in the MacOS title bar I found the answer.

I used this once on a MacBook that was, in fact, stolen from our house near PA. A week or so later, I got a call from a computer store in California, where a young man was trying to sell the MacBook. I told the clerk to call his local police, explained that the MacBook was stolen. I also notified our sheriff's office.
I never saw the MacBook, and never heard anything more about it. Fortunately, we had excellent homeowner's insurance.

My guess is that if a thief starts up the Mac and sees that it has to have a password to get in, the Mac will end up in a trash bin somewhere. But maybe an honest person will find it and call me. Or maybe I'll do something stupid and leave it in a hotel room when I'm traveling and the person who finds it is honest and will call me. Who knows?

I just have the message there on the login screen in case...

I think it's a great idea to have a way for honest folks to help if they can. I suppose the same could be done on iPads.

I have created lock screens for both my iPhone and iPad using Pixelmator ... but now the same thing can be done by simply using the Markup tools in Preview.

I haven't done that on my iPhone nor iPad but I will. That's a great idea, Ray.
