Pop-ups? Anti-virus apps?

Post by ervruhl » Thu Mar 29, 2018 12:36 pm

Besieged by pop-up ads since CenturyLink completed on on-line update of our modem Tuesday. Remedies?
Also, what anti-virus apps are most useful?

on-line update of our modem
What does that mean? The only thing you can do to a modem (I'm assuming you mean a DSL "modem") is update the firmware. And no one can do that online unless you give them your modem's password. Which you should never do.

Is it possible you downloaded and installed some nefarious software? It sounds like adware to me.

I hesitate to recommend an ad blocker, as claiming to be an ad blocker is the perfect way to advertise an adware installer. But this article seems neutral:

Maybe another SMUG member has experience with an ad blocker.

Since switching to Firefox as my primary browser, I have used uBlock Origin as an ad blocker. (see screenshots)

For antivirus, I decided to go with Bitdefender, which also may be blocking ads.

Thanks Stephen. The Macworld article was quite informative. And thanks for the warning about the modem firmware updating process and the hesitation about recommending an ad blocker.
Thanks Ray for your suggestion about Bitedefender. We are looking into it.

Thanks Stephen. The Macworld article was quite informative.
BTW, the last time I complained about DSL, the tech walked out to his truck and brought in a new modem, a few years newer than the one I had.

I expect DSL modems are one of those things, like inkjet printers, that it's best to replace every few years.
