Tip to turn on Dictation

Post by Ray Bentsen » Tue Oct 10, 2017 9:25 pm

On your iMac or MacBook, press the Fn key twice to turn on dictation, which lets you dictate text wherever you can type it (for example, in Messages, Mail, Pages, and many other apps.

Hmm. Can't make that work in any app I've tried. And if I click the Siri icon and say "Take Dictation," I get the answer "Sorry Stephen, I can't do that."

For example, when I wanted to start this reply I just pressed the FN key twice, and this is what the screen on my MacBook looked like:

I just discovered that this works for me because some time in the past I must have turned on Dictation in System Preferences > Keyboard. Sorry about that omission!

There is a lot more info here: https://support.apple.com/en-us/HT203085

Ah, well, there's my problem. I had dictation turned off.

I'm testing right now. (That sentence was dictated!)

Note that if you want to use Enhanced Dictation, you need a 1.2 GB download (3 hours for my meagre DSL). Otherwise, the text-to-speech function requires upload to Apple. For that one short sentence, this didn't cause much of a delay.
You can customize the Fn shortcut.
I also found that leaving the audio input on Automatic chose USB, not the internal microphone.
