Convert a video to a still picture

My granddaughter sent me a video. I only want the first picture, without the "play button " on her face.

Can I convert the video to a single picture? I don't want the rest of the video.

Thanks in advance for any help you can give me.

Here is one possibility (without knowing more about what filetype the movie is, and where it is currently stored).

If the movie has been saved to Photos, there is an option there to save the frame that is currently being viewed (see first screenshot).

That frame is then saved to the Pictures folder. (see second screenshot).

Hope that helps. ;)

Pause the video and take a screenshot (or take the shot before starting the video); simultaneously press and release the Wake/Sleep and Home buttons.

I use Final Cut Pro X for this because forward and backward arrow keys will advance video frame by frame.*
In Photos (and Aperture) there's no keyboard shortcut, but a mouse click will advance (or rewind) frame by frame.
The gear icon reveals a save frame option. (As Ray notes.)

(I assume you could do this in iMovie or other video manipulation software.)

And remember, any 4K video camera, including in some iPhones, will let you pull out 8 megapixel stills, plenty of resolution for most any use. Most of the video I take with my "real" camera** is short snippets for this very use.
