I have no idea if you'll be able to view these screenshots in a usable way. This is the first time I've tried to upload files here. Everything is a learning experience!

Contents of new folder (that should be empty) showing total contents of desktop:
Hello from Mt. Rainier!

OK, I think I see what's going on.

You are viewing the Desktop in a Finder window set to column view. (Desktop is selected in the far left column, under Favorites, AirDrop, etc.)
One of the items on the Desktop is selected, the new Untitled Folder, at the bottom of the column listing everything on the Desktop.
The next column to the right shows what's in the Untitled folder: nothing.

So all is well. I use the column view exclusively, but some people find it confusing. If you switch views, the confusion may well disappear. You can select any folder and view it in icon, list, column or cover flow. Note the icons above, labeled View.

Praise the Lord ....... the forum .........and Stephen Hart! You nailed it.

I called my friend and walked her through the settings. Problem solved! It's always amazing to me how something as simple and basic as this can trip up a person (including me, of course.)

Thank you so much. I can now put my grief over this issue behind me. (I think I need to stop trying to help people with their Macs.)

Enjoy the scenery at Mt. Rainier ..... or wherever you may now be.
