Mail.app Won't Stay Default

Post by Richard Serkes » Sun Feb 07, 2016 11:24 am

I've been playing with another email client, Airmail 2 which I like but not as well as good old Apple Mail. When I went back to Mail I tried to set it as my default email client but it won't stay as the default. It keeps changing to the newer program, Airmail.

I've looked high and low in Airmail's preferences to see if there's a setting in there making it the default but I can't find it. I tried Airmail's HELP but there's nothing there about making it the default. Usually, you set the default from within Mail, just like you set the default I'Net browser from within Safari. But each time I set Mail as the default it changes itself to Airmail.

Any ideas?

Did you see this page:

Maybe you have to uncheck the box in Airmail, or use the Terminal command.

Yeah, I saw that. Since I use Yosemite the option in Airmail is grayed out. Changes are made from within Mail. The Terminal command is to make Airmail the default. I DON'T want Airmail to be the default, I want Mail.

Things may work out after all. I still would like to get Mail/Preferences to do what I want it to do but my main problem with Airmail has been resolved. I really didn't like the way it handled threaded discussions. Previous comments were buried and hard to sort out. But in Airmail/Preferences I found a couple of boxes to click or not click that dealt with threaded discussions. The labels of the boxes didn't say much so I tried changing them one at a time and the problem with the threaded discussions resolved itself.

So I'm back to using Airmail but I still want to figure out what the problem is with Mail.
