Eject CD icon?

OK guys, here's a new puzzler for you. I was helping a friend with her two Macs the other day and noticed an icon in the upper right corner menubar that I had never seen there before. The icon is right next to the ones for Battery Level, Blue Tooth, Time Machine, etc. It looks like a standard "Disk Eject" symbol and when you pull it down it says "Super Drive" and sure enough, when activated, it ejects whatever disk is in the internal Super Drive. Interestingly, both of this friend's two computers have the same configuration. In other words, whoever set this up for her years ago apparently did it to both of her computers. In all my years I've never seen an "Eject" menu command for the Super Drive.

OK... works fine... no problem there. But do any of you have any idea how you cause such an icon to appear? I have wracked my brains trying to figure out which app or which System Pref can put up such an icon. Maybe I'm looking right past something obvious, but this one sure has me stumped.

It's not causing any trouble... it's just puzzling to me. Inquiring minds want to know.

This appears to be an easy way to remove that menubar icon: ... m-menu-bar

Apparently, the eject button is part of OS X Menu Extras. Lots of hits on google for that term, though it still might be puzzling how that got implemented in the first place.

The process on how to add the icon is stated in Stephen's referenced URL. Attached, I hope is the location sequence. If not, it is System>Library>Core Services>Menu Extras>

It is on my OS.10.6 system(Snow Leopard)

Excellent Sherlock! (And I mean that sincerely. I was too lazy to follow up on this.)
I found the same file in Yosemite.

I don't have built-in SuperDrive in my 2014, riMac, so I tested with an Apple USB SuperDrive.

And... it works!

However, there's a little UI issue. It's logical, but might throw someone for a loop.
Clicking on the icon does not eject the disc, it shows a dropdown menu. If you only have one disc drive (built in or mounted, I assume), there's only one item in the dropdown list. You have to click on that item to eject the disc. Presumably if you have several disc drives built in or mounted, you can choose which one to eject.

And, command dragging does indeed delete the menu bar item.

Good work both of you! I hadn't figured out how to even Google it. The fact that this is a configurable part of core system services tells me that someone pretty knowledgeable must have set this up for my friend (most likely some time ago) because I sure never heard of it before. One wonders what other curious tricks are available through "Menu Extras"?
