Apple says everyone should install this update as soon as possible. No reboot is necessary.

Stephen, I wonder if this is the same as the item which was automatically installed on Erv's computer right around Dec 23rd.
The notice below appeared on his desktop.
My second illustration shows the explanation which Erv discovered (with Jerry's help, I believe).

No similar notice appeared on my iMac. I'm on OSX 10.9.4 - Erv is on OSX 10.9.5

I don't know what to do: Should I go ahead and install the security update from the link you posted?

Yes, that's the same Network Time Server update.

I don't understand why the brouhaha in the Mac media though. You only get automatic installation of anything from Mac App Store if you've selected that option in System Preferences > App Store. See the image for the way I have my riMac set up.

The one thing I saw that was unusual was a notice that Apple strongly recommends this update. I have seen no indication that updating could possibly cause any problem. Apple has released many stand-alone security updates over the years. Lower-priority security updates are rolled into the next OS X update.

There are instructions available to install this update on older OS X versions. I think those are ones that don't support Mac App Store. I would recommend caution and good research before installing any OS hack.

From what I've read, this security flaw only applies to users running time servers, not to users who only use Apple's time server to set their Macs' clocks. So, Don't Panic.

Thanks, Stephen,

I do have preferences set to install system data files and security updates.
So, I am setting panic aside!
