What should I do to have iTunes play the next tune in a series of tunes in one folder?

Normally, if I'm in a playlist, the next listed song plays automatically.
If I'm in my main music list, with no playlist selected, the next listed song plays automatically. What's listed as the next song depends on which column I have selected for sorting: Name, Artist, etc.

You can also do an ad lib list by selecting the next song to play.

Is that not what you're experiencing?

But if you search for a song, apparently just that song plays.

I touch on a song in a play list and only that one song plays.
I want the next song to play when the previous song is ended.

Sounds like you may have clicked on the repeat icon at the top ... assuming that you are using iTunes on a Mac.

Clicking on the icon will change it to repeat the entire playlist, or to no repeat (gray).

See if the following chart helps.
