Not free, but cheap at the current price of $30, Acorn is another alternative:

I know Richard is set, but just to add another possibility:

iDraw is like Illustrator. It has freehand drawing (not just bezier curves) and layers, so it'd do the map/trail job too. $24.

Acorn have a great interface :!: try out different cheap editors like photo editor for mac http://macphun.com or another with such functionality..
