App Store Phishing Scam

I just got this email. Since I haven't cancelled any App Store purchases, I was suspicious. Next I noticed that it was sent to an email address I rarely use, and which is not the one I use as my Apple ID. And when I hovered over the Order Details link, it showed an address that has nothing to do with Apple. It's obviously a phishing scam, so don't click on the link if you receive one. Just trash it.

You might want to post a link to this thread on Macintouch. That's pretty convincing looking--except for the obvious flaws you mention, flaws that a lot of people might not pay attention to. I'm sure sorry we have to pay any attention to such stuff.

I've done a little digging and it appears that this scam is coming from Russia. Interpol has released a photo of the perpetrator, so if you see anyone looking like this be careful.

Macintouch reports a couple more sightings of this phishing scam. One person clicked through to an online pharmacy, the other to a "bargain" price on Adobe Creative Suite (with no serial number).

I wish it didn't need repeating, but there ain't no such thing as a free lunch. Or even a surprisingly cheap lunch (except at Costco).

There's one way to get Adobe Creative Suite cheaply: be a bona fide educational user. Any site appearing to sell Creative Suite (or any other software) cheaply is a scam.

It may be that this apparently Russian spam is just doing automatic linking to various more or less nefarious sites.

We don't talk about that side of the family much.
