Finder Sidebar Size

Post by Bob Wiswell » Sun Jun 30, 2013 3:22 pm

In Snow Leopard (10.6.8), how do I change the size of the icon and print in the Finder Sidebar? In my own files I found the instructions for an earlier OSX, but it doesn't work in 10.6. The old path was System Preferences>General>Sidebar icon size>small, medium, large. Straight forward. But, in 10.6 at System Preferences>General>there isn't a selection for the icon size. I have been all over Help, but cannot find anything.

Bob,
Don't know how it is in Snow Leopard but in Lion and Mountain Lion it's right where you noted it was.... System Prefs --> General --> Sidebar icon size

I have Snow Leopard 10.6.8, and I think I can help. Go to "finder" (click on desktop); click on "view" in top left corner; click on "show View Options".

RWehner,: the icon sizing and grid spacing shown in "show View Options" changes the icons on the desktop and the window in Icon View, but doesn't seem to change the size of the Sidebar Icons. I have a 24" iMac and I am able to increase the size of the font in the column view, but I can't change the sidebar; I am trying to make it easier to read with my tried old eyes.

Jerry: It appears that the path I (and you) mentioned is for 10.7 and above. My 10.6 System Prefs does not have a General category, or at least it is not obvious. If I go to Finder Preferences>General>but nothing here to change icon size. In the last sentence of my original post I mis-spoke, I mean't to say Finder Preferences>General, not System Preferences>General.

This may have been introduced in Lion. I can't find any hints for 10.6.

The preference was changed slightly in Mountain Lion: System Preferences > General > Sidebar icon size:

By the way, back when I wore glasses, I had pretty good success with getting my optician to order glasses with reading distance on the bottom half and computer distance on the top half. You need to get inch measurements for how you actually work.

If you don't need glasses normally, you might try several different reading glasses powers. The ones I use for my iMac are weaker than the ones I use for reading.

Now let's clarify one point that may be confusing things here.... I am talking about Apple Menu ---> System Prefs --> General

NOT!!!! Repeat _NOT_ Finder Menu ---> Finder --> Preferences

It is my strong recollection that EVERY version of OS X has had a "General" tab in System Preferences. This goes back to OS X 10.1 if memory serves. Are you saying that your System Preferences does not show ANY "General" tab?

That is exactly what I am saying. My Icon in that first position you show is titled, "Appearance" and does not show any way to resize the sidebar icon size. I tried to attach a screenshot, but could not figure out how. I tried to change it from a PNG file to a JPEG file and that didn't help. All that seemed to attach was the title of the shot and not the photo itself. There used to be a place on the forum that explained the procedure, but I couldn't find it quickly.

Oops, I see the instructions now. Here is a screenshot of my System Preferences using Snow Leopard OSX 10.6.8.

Aha! It's so hard to remember each of the various system versions and what was changed at each stage along this convoluted route. So you're saying that the Appearance tab in Snow Leopard does not have the choice to change "Sidebar Icon Size"? So what ARE the choices in there?

All the poking around I've done on the web seems to say that you CANNOT change the size of sidebar icons in Snow Leopard. Truthfully, I guess I never tried to do it before. I guess my question is 'was this possible before?' In other words, was this something we could do previously and simply cannot do in Snow Leopard? I realize this is very frustrating but I've just spent some time trying to find the answer to this and could not! So now you that can do it in Lion and Mountain Lion... do I assume you are in a situation where you cannot use Lion / Mountain Lion for some reason on this machine?
