Safari and Favicons

Post by Stephen Hart » Sun Oct 07, 2018 2:01 pm

Safari 12, included in Mojave, but also available as an update, now has the ability to show favicons in tabs. Favicons are those tiny icons to the left of a URL, the ones you can drag to the desktop to save a web location file. Many sites have custom icons.

I noticed recently that my own domain, eugraph.com, was showing the wrong favicon.
I created a new favicon in Photoshop, then found a free site that converts .png images to .ico, the format for favicons.
I named the result favicon.ico and put it in the root of my domain. That should have worked to solve the problem, but it didn't.
A bit of research revealed some instructions for deleting Safari's favicon database, but only for older versions of Safari.

So if you ever see the wrong favicon on a site, here's how to fix the problem, and force Safari to use the latest favicon.

1. Quit Safari
2. Navigate to your main user home > Library > Safari
3. Find the folder named Favicon Cache and drag it to the desktop
4. Restart Safari. It will download the favicons again from each site you visit and add them to the favicon database.

If you wonder about the different favicons, look at the favicons folder in the Favicon Cache folder. The images will vary from sharp to very pixellated looking, depending on how they were created.

A little more on this process...

Here's the web site I used to create the .ico format necessary for web sites:
http://www.favicon.cc/

This web page mentions the hidden formats Apple's Preview can create. Unfortunately, Preview in Mojave does not include the .ico format.

There's also Image2icon, which converts to many icon formats, including .ico.
