reopening files saved in Word and Excel.

I create some files that I need frequently throughout the year. I keep them on my desktop and click on them every time that an addition needs to be made. Now, every time that I click on a saved Excel file to make a modification, it opens in Numbers. GRR. Word also opens in Pages. How can I stop this from happening? I want each one to re-open in the same format that it was saved.

Unless something weird is going on, this should fix the issue.

1. Find a Word file in the Finder. Select it, but don't open it. That is to say, click once, not twice.
2. Hit command I, or choose File > Get Info.
3. Look for Open With (see screenshot), make sure Microsoft Word is selected, and click Change all...
4. Do the same steps for Excel docs.
5. Bob should be your uncle.

Expanding on this question, this procedure can be slightly modified if you need to get a single document to open in a non-default app. You can also select a file, control click and choose Open With from the contextual menu.

I've seen this pop up so many times that I think there's a gremlin that changes the default app somehow.
