Apple Watch & Cellular Connectivity

Post by Ray Bentsen » Thu Nov 01, 2018 1:17 pm

Here are examples, suggested by Apple, of what Apple sales people might convey to customers :
What you need
• “Every Apple Watch requires an iPhone. To use Apple Watch Series 4 (GPS + Cellular) and Apple Watch Series 3 (GPS + Cellular), you’ll need an iPhone 6 or later. It’s recommended you update iPhone to iOS 12 and Apple Watch to watchOS 5. You’ll also need an eligible wireless service plan.”
• “Good news, your Apple Watch will share the same phone number as your iPhone. And Apple Watch seamlessly connects to your cellular network whenever it’s not connected to your iPhone or Wi-Fi. So you’ll never miss an important call or message, even if your phone isn’t with you.”

Service providers and plans for Apple Watch
• “Your Apple Watch and iPhone service provider must be the same. We can check apple.com/watch/
cellular to see if your service provider offers cellular service for your Apple Watch.”
• “You’ll need a wireless service plan for cellular service. Your carrier will have more information about the plans you’re eligible for.”

How to activate cellular service
• “Apple Watch with cellular has an eSIM in it, so there’s no need to get a SIM card or transfer the SIM from another device. Activation happens over the air.”
• “It’s easy to get started. When you pair your Apple Watch with your iPhone, you’ll be prompted to set up cellular service and guided through a few simple steps.“
• “If you’re upgrading from Apple Watch Series 3 (GPS + Cellular) to Apple Watch Series 4 (GPS + Cellular), there are a few steps to go through:
• Remove the carrier plan from your old Apple Watch. You can do this from the Apple Watch app on iPhone or by erasing your old Apple Watch in Settings.
• Pair your new Apple Watch Series 4 with your iPhone. During the setup, tap “Set Up Cellular” to add a cellular plan.
• Some carriers will allow you to swap your existing plan to your new Apple Watch directly from the Apple Watch app. If you don’t see an option to swap your cellular plan, contact your carrier for help.”
• Dual SIM. “If you set up two cellular plans using Dual SIM1 on your iPhone XS, iPhone XS Max, or iPhone XR, you can add one or both plans to your Apple Watch Series 4 (GPS + Cellular) or Apple Watch Series 3 (GPS + Cellular), then choose which one your watch uses when it connects to cellular networks. When you're away from your phone and your watch is connected to the cellular line you’ve chosen, you can make and receive phone calls on that line, and send and receive messages on both active phone cellular lines. Dual SIM will be available later this year.”
• “If you choose not to set up cellular service during the initial Apple Watch setup process, you can always go back later to sign up. Just open the Apple Watch app on your iPhone and select Cellular under My Watch.”

Where you can use it
• “Apple Watch with cellular supports voice and data over LTE and UMTS. And you can use cellular capabilities wherever you have that type of coverage.”
• “You should know that when you travel internationally, roaming outside the network coverage area isn’t available for Apple Watch with cellular—even though your iPhone plan may support roaming. But you’ll stay connected when your Apple Watch is in proximity of your iPhone or connected to Wi-Fi.”
• “There are different regional versions of Apple Watch with cellular, and they’re optimized to work in the country they’re purchased in—so not all models work in all countries or regions. If you buy in another country, make sure you get a model that supports the LTE and UMTS bands for your country and supported carrier.”
An old Norse adage: Change is inevitable, except from a vending machine.
