Migration Assistant in Yosemite

Post by Stephen Hart » Tue Oct 21, 2014 3:16 pm

Migration Assistant has improved some in Yosemite, a fact I'll appreciate in a couple of weeks. Specifically, it can handle the situation where you set up a user account same as the old user account during initial setup.

Among all the alternatives, it's odd that this article doesn't mention two sources for your user data: 1. a recently updated Time Machine drive and 2. a recent bootable clone. Of course no one would migrate to a new Mac without at least one of these.

I have never seen any data on the transfer speed among the various options:
Both Macs on ethernet LAN
Mac-to-Mac ethernet
Mac-to-Mac Thunderbolt or FireWire/Thunderbolt
USB3 external drive (TimeMachine or bootable clone)
Thunderbolt external drive (TimeMachine or bootable clone)
FireWire external drive with FireWire/Thunderbolt adapter (TimeMachine or bootable clone)

I happen to have a Time Machine drive that has USB3, so that's the route I'll take.

If Apple keeps fixing these little annoyances, I may be out of a job.
