Mail Won't Stay Open

Post by Richard Serkes » Fri Oct 17, 2014 12:50 pm

After upgrading to Yosemite I find that the Mail application won't stay open. I click the icon and it opens but in 3-5 seconds it shuts itself down with the message window giving me the options of IGNORE, REPORT, and REOPEN. I sent a REPORT to Apple but that still doesn't help me. After several tries I rebooted but I still have the same problem. Fortunately, I have another email program (Airmail) that I'm using until this issue gets resolved.

Anyone else having this problem?

Any ideas?

Here's an update...

I booted to my clone and ran Disk Utilities from the clone to work on my HD. First I did a Repair Permissions but I really didn't think that would do anything. And then I tried running Repair Disk. Before that utility finished I got a message saying that I should backup my HD, reformat the HD and then reload all the data. Uh, I don't think so.

So I then ran Tech Tool Pro 7's version of Repair Disk which is much more robust. It finished doing its thing and then I rebooted back to the HD. Still, the Mail program shuts down in a few seconds.

The only other option I can think of is to reinstall Yosemite. Oh well, I have a good book and will start a new pot of coffee.

Richard,
I have been using Yosemite since beta 1 and have had no problems with Mail.
This looks very much like Mail's trying to read a file or database and encountering a file it can't read. I know you're a grandmaster of backing up, so you don't really have anything to worry about, at least immediately.

Here are three links to follow up on.

Well, links 1 and 3 offer a trick I've never heard of but will try when I can. Link 2 offers three possible causes for the problem. Two don't apply but one does which is a corrupted app file. I'm remedying that right now by downloading and reinstalling Yosemite. It's possible but not likely that something was corrupted in the download and/or installation so the reinstallation of Yosemite should ferret out if this is the problem.

I just wish I had known about the other trick first because the downloading of Yosemite is taking just under four (4) hours. In about two hours it'll be done and after reinstallation I'll try that trick if I still have the problem.

Needless to say, I backed up and created a bootable clone before upgrading to Yosemite.

Still no joy. I reinstalled Yosemite and it didn't fix the problem. Then I tried the trick in threads 1 and 3 (see above) but that didn't fix the issue since Mail wouldn't stay open long enough for me to get in there and do some looking around. I wanted to rebuild my database (folders) but it was grayed out. I'm stumped. Here's the problem as caught by Yosemite. Any ideas will be appreciated and yes, I've sent the entire report along to Apple.

Sounds like a call to Apple is in order.

How does that work? My iMac is well beyond the Applecare warranty. Do you get free phone calls for an OS update?

I should have thought of this before. I keep a guest account that is modified in no way whatsoever. It's for trouble-shooting. I opened it and Mail works just fine. It's in my personal account that Mail is now failing. Hmmmm.

So Mail was working just fine, I upgraded to Yosemite and then Mail fails in my account but not the untampered with guest account.

To make things easy on me I can always change the guest account to mine making me the administrator again, deleting the old personal account and then creating a new guest account. Not elegant but doable. Hmmmmm.

Is the Mail app in your applications folder? Do you have any third party plugins?

How to remove third-party plugins:

Quit Mail if it's running.
From the Finder's Go menu choose Go to Folder.
Go to the ~/Library/Mail/Bundles folder.
Delete the contents of the folder.
From the Finder's Go menu choose Go to Folder.
Go to /Library/Mail/Bundles .
Delete the contents of the folder.
Open Mail.

Yes and no. But I'll try your suggestion tomorrow. Right now I'm tired of it all.
