WiFi Syncing Problems? Try These Suggestions.

Post by Stephen Hart » Sun Sep 21, 2014 2:11 pm

Occasionally, in the last couple of days and when I was using previous iPhones, my iPhone wouldn't show up in iTunes unless it was physically plugged in via USB.

Here are some suggestions for fixing that issue.

I've still had problems, even after trying all those suggestions. More suggestions include resetting WiFi on your iPhone or iPad plus restarts. Sometimes fixes seem to stick for a while, then, not so much.

I checked my iPad, and its WiFi was off. I don't know why. But once I turned that back on, I could force a sync from the iPad, and it's stayed showing in iTunes for some hours.

Anyone else having problems? It's more an annoyance than an existential threat, but still.

Still an ongoing problem for some, including me. iOS 8.0.2 does not fix WiFi sync. Various fixes (probably just restarting the iPhone) makes it reappear in iTunes, but then later it disappears. I've found no long-term fix yet.
Note that wired sync always works. And if you need to sync and can't use the USB cable, restarting your iDevice will bring WiFi sync back temporarily.

There's an extensive discussion at Apple Support Communities on this issue, which is still not resolved. OS 8.1 still might fix it.

Here's the only hope from Apple's list of bug fixes included in iOS 8.1:
Resolves issues with Wi-Fi performance that could occur when connected to some base stations
It'll take a few days to know if this does fix WiFi syncing, as restarting alone usually temporarily fixes WiFi syncing.

I checked and my iPhone 6 with 8.1 started to Wifi sync a few seconds after iTunes was opened.

Were you having any problems with WiFi sync before? Apparently this doesn't affect everyone.

Both my iPhone and my iPad have been showing in iTunes since this morning. But time will tell.

This was my first attempt at WiFi syncing.

I'm up to 24 hours for the first time since iOS 8. And there's an Apple senior advisor posting his contact information in the Apple Support Communities discussion.

I mostly do WiFi syncing from iTunes, not from my iPhone or iPad. It saves having to plug in, and in the case of the iPad, it saves having to go downstairs and schlep the iPad back up.

I think I can say, provisionally, that iOS 8.1 fixed (or mostly fixed) this issue for me.
In past iOS versions, I've occasionally seen my iPhone 5 disappear from the iTunes devices list. And since iOS 8.1, that's exactly what I'm experiencing with my iPhone 6. It's disappeared once, but synced by WiFi several times.
