To download Mountain Lion from Snow Leopard, you must first make sure your Snow Leopard install is fully updated, so run Software Update. Then run it again for good measure.

There's not that much software that runs in Lion and not in Mountain Lion. Some software hasn't been fully updated to take advantage of what's available for programmers in Mountain Lion. Checking the compatibility lists is a good idea, as long as you use find on page, etc. carefully. Plowing through a list of apps one by one might cause brain damage.

My experience is that everything I use that worked on Lion also works on Mountain Lion, about the same way.
