A MacInTouch Reader submitted these useful comments:
The free menubar application AudioSwitcher was mentioned on MacInTouch today, as a way to "quickly switch among your audio input and output devices". By all means try it, but here's a tip for you if you don't need all the features presented by this app: Hold down the Option key and click on the standard Sound/Volume menu bar icon on any Mac, and it will present you with a straightforward list of inputs and outputs to choose from, as well as an item to open the Sound preferences pane.
In fact, if you weren't aware, a few of Apple's standard menu bar icons provide additional functionality and diagnostic information when you Option-click on them, such as Bluetooth, Wi-Fi, and Time Machine.
Option-clicking on the Notifications menu bar icon in 10.8/10.9 will toggle Notifications on/off for the rest of the day. This is the same as opening the Notifications pane, scrolling up, and toggling the on/off switch.
