After dealing with more than a dozen massive downloads, several of which stalled out and had to be started over, I've sent feedback to Apple suggesting a central download core for Mavericks.
All downloads should be handled by a single core service. This software could prioritize downloads, be sure to restart them if they stall, make sure increments are backed up, automatically time downloads for the wee hours (as you can now manually in App Store), etc. And, it should do this across a local network, including Apple TV. As it is, different apps and different computers compete.
I don't know how many times I've said "Why is Safari so slow?" only to find that Karen's computer is downloading ten hour-long podcasts.
