More from Macintouch, maybe more than you wanted to read about:

Neither of my scanners, an HP Scanjet G4050 and a Canon MX882, show up in System Preferences or Image Capture.
"Try this software, others have reported success:
Drivers, Software and Firmware for HP Scanjet N6310 Document Flatbed Scanner

including with your scanner.
Here's my reply:
This software installer did, indeed, make my Scanjet G4050 visible to Image Capture, and therefore to Photoshop CS6. It also installed HP Scanjet G4050.app. All of these seem to use Image Capture.

The software also disabled HP Scan.app and HP Scan Pro.app.

Overall, I think this is an improvement, so thanks for the tip.

(BTW, I fixed the problem with the Canon All-in-One by adding a USB cable, which the scanner apparently requires.)

And it gets more confused.

As I wrote above, the install suggested by a Macintouch poster made my HP scanner visible to Image Capture (and therefore all the apps that use it, such as Photoshop). But it killed both versions of HP scanning software. Wishing I had one of the HP scanning apps back, I ran the scan software installer again, and lo, I have HP Scan Pro working and can use Image Capture.

One poster on Macintouch had this to say:
MacInTouch Reader
Fujitsu ScanSnap Manager 6.0 L10 drops some messages in the console but seems to work Ok.
