Next time you plug the camera in give this a try. Plug it in to the original USB port that didn't work and see what happens. I'm betting there was a temporary issue.

If your G5 iMac fails to startup this is likely the cause. Leaking capacitors. Red arrows point to capacitor failure. Cost to repair this is around $800 as a local Mac user found much to her unhappiness.

Plug the camera into the computer, turn the camera on. Watch the display on the camera, not the computer. Does it tell you to PLEASE SELECT THE USB MODE?

The gentleman was told that the Verizon MiFi equipment requires an Intel processor and although their website says only "Mac OS 10.4 or higher" ... A Verizon MiFi will work. It provides wifi access for up to 5 devices. Pricey tho.
